In Sold by Patricia McCormick a girl named Lakshmi is tricked into entering sex trafficking. She's no doubt been through some rather traumatic experiences. She's starved, beaten, and overall neglected as a growing child. But the worst of all is not physical at all. It's completely mental. The number one pattern is that she's constantly taken advantage of. Every weakness she's shown to try to be nice, and trusting, is taken advantage of. It shows how ruthless that side of the world is. And near the end, she becomes as cautious. Suffering near people is not better if those people do not care. It is worse. Just more people to ignore you. Lakshmi was nice to the wrong people. It teaches us how lucky we are to be in our situation.
If this was happening in Brooklyn, you could count that the police would be on top of it immediately Our 'Mumtaz' of the west would be arrested for a long time and that's where our story would end. the only reason Sold went on for so long was the immense amount of apathy that exists in the red light districts of Calcutta, India. So many people do not care. The police even know about it, but they stay quiet for money. Even the police are taking advantage of people and blackmailing others. The police, the supposed long arm of the law. This long arm is sufficiently long. It is just lazy.
Not to mention how much people care about themselves. They take every opportunity they can to put someone else down to put themselves higher. It's animal-like. Humans are the only species that will sacrifice something for themselves to help others, and not them in anyway. They are the only species to come up with taxes. Paying for something that will probably never help you, but it's not about you. It's about humanity, and about others. That is the idea that made humanity rise above everyone else. These people who are doing anything they can to put themselves as high as possible, are literally holding back humanity from progressing in that area. People must learn to share if everyone will thrive. They are constantly just taking advantage of Lakshmi. Pushing her down so so so far. So far down that she is among the lowest in society. Why? They wanted some money. It's sickening.
